I purchased my '06 Sportster on Saturday and I'm  angry with myself for not buying one sooner. While I'm still getting used to a few things, I finally feel like I've found the right bike for me. All the twin cams have dozens of engine defects. I have road my Sportster all over the state. It handles the twisties as if they were nothing. This mean machine runs strong. The wheels, brakes, forks, lights, frame, engine, transmission, electrical system, gas tank, seat, oil tank, swing arm, rear shocks, everything is changed, modern, but retains its traditional looks. Surprised that the forward controls are so comfortable. Most maintenance is simple enough to do at home with basic tools and a repair manual. Today's Sportster looks very much like the XLCH Sportster of 1958 (In the Harley alphabet, all Sportster models have always started with "XL"), but in fact every part of the bike is different. Bringing it in for the 1,000 mile service and not a single problem to date. If you're planning on touring the United States, doing 500-1000 miles per day, get a full sized touring bike like the ElectraGlide (that's what I ride). The Sportster is my third bike. Good (but pricy) accessories. Harley Sportster 1200 - Practical All Around Bike Some say the Harley-Davidson Sportster is "half a Harley" but it can do anything you need a bike to do. The more miles I put on this bike the better it gets. It has been real realiable, powerful, comfortable(stock seat isn't the best) and the most important to me smooth. This is a classic. The Roadster comes with the most powerful braking set-up of any Harley Sportster – decent twin discs complete with twin four-piston calipers – and they work well enough, too, without quite being as good as the true sports/superbike elite. Only draw back is the stock seat, after about 2000 miles I had to get a better one and like all Sportsters, you will get some engine heat while at idle but none once you're rolling.
