In having the opportunity to review new releases from The Criterion Collection, there are certain films I have been waiting to see make their way to Blu-ray. The Criterion Collection has done an excellent job bringing this film to Blu-ray, as the technical presentation is as great as you’d typically expect. The film follows Jef as he sets up his alibi with his beautiful girlfriend Jane (Nathalie Delon) for a specific time period and arranges to join a group of card players later that night to also be seen in public. Jef lives alone in a nondescript apartment with only one unique feature – his pet bird he keeps in a cage. Alain Delon is the epitome of cool as Jef. However, it also can’t help but feel stylized. Sometime later, he carries out a hit; murdering a man in a jazz club and nearly getting away clean. A couple years ago, the first film I reviewed for Blu-ray Authority was Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Cercle Rouge. No, not empty. I have plenty of admiration for Le Samouraï. There are some extended scenes that portray characters going through the chores, assignments or tasks they need to complete. It all starts somewhere, and this film certainly garnered the attention of many filmmakers working today. 4 We see interrogations, reactions from the mob, the status of a piano playing witness, and the further actions of Jef. Therefore, the picture sort of fluctuates between jaw-dropping and so-so. As a fan, I will still say this is by far an away a much more pleasing transfer than the old Criterion DVD (which looked great at the time) and well worth the upgrade. The Criterion Collection’s gorgeous Blu-ray remaster offers the perfect presentation of Melville’s flawless classic, whether you’re coming to it for the first time or experiencing it again. While leaving, he is seen exiting the scene of the crime by a beautiful jazz pianist (Cathy Rosier.) I mentioned how cool this all is. Flesh Tones: Similarly, facial textures register quite strongly here. You get a good look at the cast, and the film’s presentation supports this level of clarity nicely. Clarity/Detail: According to the information provided with this release, Le Samouraï’s HD transfer was created from the 35mm original camera negative and a 35mm interpositive. A 4K remaster would likely help Le Samouraï not have this problem, but darker and nighttime scenes show the issue regarding crush and a lack of sharpness in this presentation.  If you have seen other films shot by Henri Decae (The 400 Blows, Le Cercle Rouge) you should know you are in for a real treat. You can skip to the end and leave a response.
