This target is actually too large for our current set up (Orion 8" Astrograph and ZWO ASI 1600MM camera), so we are waiting to get a wider telescope before really attempting to capture it. An 8 SCT such as the Celestron C8 has a focal length of 2032mm, so that could capture most of these galaxies in detail. Each and every one of the galaxy photos took several hours to capture and process.  As for Astrophotography, a DSLR camera will have no problem gathering the light from the core and the arms of the galaxy, but you should spend at least two or three hours on it. Look for the handle of the Big Dipper Asterism and you should find M101 just above the double stars Alcor and Mizar. NGC 4565 has a very bright core and the bulge is clearly visible. We have taken test shots several times but never went through with spending several hours on it and stacking our results.  The image shown above was created using a large refractor telescope (Sky-Watcher Esprit 150) and LRGB filters from my backyard in the city. Thor's Helmet has a lot of faint outer gas that will only become visible if you have plenty of images to stack. The two small nearby galaxies are also faint, so make sure to try your best to make them stand out without over-processing NGC 4565.
