Established in 2005, the USS San Francisco Memorial Foundation is dedicated to preserving the history of the storied WWII heavy cruiser and the 100 sailors and 7 Marines killed in action during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal 75 years ago on 12/13 November 1942. A living museum on the National Register of Historic Places and a National Historic Landmark, the O'Brien transports you back almost seven decades to when sailors braved the harshest of high seas and threat of enemy attack. In 1986 the torpedo at the memorial site was put in place by the San Francisco Chapter of USSVWWII. San Francisco is four years older than Honolulu, but she had been refueled and upgraded in 2000–2002. We honor the memory of those who have served our country on this, our Memorial Day 2020. San Francisco (CA-38) was authorized by an act of Congress in February 1929, as part of the “Cruiser Bill”, which called for the building of the Portland, New Orleans and Brooklyn class cruisers. Collected from the national archives, families and friends of those who served aboard USS San Francisco (CA-38), these photos will help preserve the memory of this great ship and the important part that it and its crew played in defending our country’s freedom.
