Nancy loved this book and Anne of the Island, and took them with her wherever she went. I read this a long time ago, I have an autographed copy. It was a fast and enjoyable read. Actually they did this a long time before but I'm catching up. She was a remarkable women. By the end of the Second World War, she was the Gestapo's most wanted person. Do you think this book would be appropriate for a 6th grader who is doing a study on women's role in WWII? At the time the Germans invaded France, she was married to Henri Fiocca, a wealthy French businessman in Marseille. His busy professional life involves co-hosting the breakfast program on Sydney's Radio 2UE, writing weekly columns for the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Herald newspapers, appearing on Foxtel's Back Page television show and, when time permits, authoring best-selling books. Since “Anne” is very high on my list as well, I was instantly intrigued. It sometimes falls into buffoonery. The best of the books, I’ve found, is Peter FitzSimmons‘ Nancy Wake, which appeared in 2011, the year of her death at the age of 98. She was a native Australian who became an undercover agent and explosives expert. She herself was caught at one point, but she never gave up, and after regaining her freedom, went right back to putting it to the Germans. He is the author of over twenty-seven books - including biographies of Charles Kingsford Smith, Nancy Wake, Kim Beazley, Nene King, Nick Farr-Jones, Steve Waugh and John Eales - and is one of Australia's biggest selling non-fiction authors of the last fifteen years. She used her society position and reputation as a cover for her work in the local escape network, organising for Allied servicemen to pass through a series of safehouses and be guided out of France over the Pyrenees. I've given this four stars, however, because Nancy Wake was an awesome human being. Nancy Wake has been claimed by both New Zealand and Australia as one of their own - by New Zealand because she was of Maori descent, born there and retained close ties with her extended family; and by Australia because she lived there from early childhood, grew up there and lived for a period of time after the war there. Her ability to maintain her cover for so long and disappear whenever the Germans thought they were getting close to identifying her led to her Gestapo nickname of "The White Mouse". I don't know if Fitzsimons was attempting to capture Nancy's spirit, or if this is just how he writes. She was a great one for laughter and and partying with her men ("because tomorrow we could be dead"). She vows to dedicate her time to inform people of the atrocities the Nazis were perpetrating in Austria and Germany. Nancy immediately became active in the Resistance movement, smuggling messages and food to underground groups in Southern France and helping refugees flee to Spain. An interesting account of another gutsy, fearless, daring female who joined the Resistance in France in 1940 after Germany invaded France. She becomes a journalist and when she witnesses the Nazis whipping Jews in Vienna, her life changes. She introduces a myriad of characters who played significant roles in her life. Nancy Wake’s early life and war exploits are too important to leave out of print. Well-written account by Peter FitzSimons who met and conducted interviews with Nancy Wake, who had also written her own autobiography in 1985.
