";s:4:"text";s:19748:"There were still plenty of the terrestrials being blown on to the water this week with ants, beetles, daddy long legs and some hawthorns being helped out on to the water by the daily breezes, providing a variety of temptation to a possible passing trout. These are big trout and big trout are often looking for flies that are showing signs of vulnerability and that means flies that are less than perfect. Fish catches this week were caught on a variety of patterns. The Balling buzzer late in the evening around Bog Bay was good for some. Along with our meteorological woes there are some other factors which are effectively pushing Sheelin trout fishing into this more challenging phase. Friday and Saturday were all a bit of a struggle as anglers tried to cope with strong and gusty winds and continuous rainfall and Sunday was a total wash out with drenching downpours, strong winds and a sky that stayed on the ground all day. Generally the longer a guide has been in the area, the better they will be. Fly Fishing on Lough Sheelin (Co Cavan), one of the best venues for lake-dwelling brown trout fishing in Ireland. Sheelin's healthy CPUE of 5.0 in 1978 had fallen to 0.6 by 2002 and is still dropping. Last Monday saw the end of the 2020 fishing season on Lough Sheelin. A good guide should definitely know their stuff. Anglers were still using spent gnat patterns with the Wulffs in Grey, Green and the Royal being responsible for a modest number of catches. If trout are focused on the pinhead fry either avoid these areas of the lake, usually the bays and inlets or cast a floating fry imitation and pray hard. The traditional method of dapping a grasshopper was tried by one angler during the week with a moderate degree of success. Many of the Sheelin trout have moved on to Daphnia and pinheads. Lough Sheelin took no prisoners this week and fishing was tricky and opportunistic. Lough Sheelin Ghillie and Guiding services are based within the network of loughs and rivers found in the heart of Co. Cavan it is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets. At the moment caenis are hatching in their millions on Sheelin. Teams of wets were used as dry fly conditions deteriorated. This week was all about teams of wets with little room for any dries. The numbers of anglers fishing the lake averaged 10 to 12 per day with a slight increase for the evening. Waiting in Lockdown – boats at Kilnahard, May 1st 2020 Forced into Spring hibernation, the anglers at Lough Sheelin initially struggled with a 2km distance restriction until the ESB finally closed all of its Shannon waters on April 9th terminating fishing altogether on this lake. Humpies and Stimulators brought results but other popular patterns were Claret Bumbles, Golden Olive Bumbles, Bibios, Klinkhammers, dry Buzzers (sizes 8-12), Emerging Buzzers, Grey Duster (size 10), Royal Wulffs, Dabblers (Green, Golden Mayfly and International), the Octopus, Welshman’s Button, Chocolate Drop, Muddlers, Daddys, Hoppers, the Telephone Fly, Elk Hair Caddis, the F-Fly, Red Tailed Peters and small dry sedges. Fund Raising. The places that produced catches were down along the Western shore of the lake, Stony Island, at the back of Church Island, Merry Pt., Wilson’s pt, Inchacup, Chambers Bay and from Kilnahard down to Crover, Crane Island, Bog Bay, and Sailors Garden and into Goreport, Lynch’s Pt, Derrysheridan and Derry Pt. Fly fishing for wild brown trout is a specialty of mine. The lough is approximately 4,000 acres in size, more than 4 miles long and over one mile wide. Lough Sheelin has a large number of trout in the 4 to 5 lb bracket which is an enviable fact. Lough Sheelin is the setting of the song "Lough Sheelin Eviction", made popular by the Wolfe Tones. The top baits were sliders and line through lures, all available in local tackle shops. Trout do not stop feeding because the weather is bad, instead they drop down to the lower water columns and become hooked on whatever abundant food there is available here – daphnia and pinhead fry as well as the bottom dwellers of shrimp and hog louse. The song is purportedly based on an account of an eviction of more than 700 tenants, [9] witnessed by Dr. Thomas Nulty , Roman Catholic Bishop of Meath, [10] in 1848, in his first year as a priest in the diocese. It is still early days for the sedge fishing here so if meteorological conditions improve there is a lot to look forward from Sheelin’s caddisflies. Changing flies more often is advisable when fishing attractor flies until you find the right combination and a good long drag free presentation is just as important as on any cast. Trout are always on the lookout for food but it isn’t just prey they are after, it is easy to capture prey, our trout want the most gain for the least effort so a congregation of a protein packed meal in the form of dozens of small fish is a very attractive and tempting option over the alternative of cruising a large area of water looking for an insect or two. An imperfect copy of the natural real insect which has included a few good trigger points that portray the illusion that the prey is vulnerable in some ways is a good plan so keeping it scruffy and not too regimental could be the way forward when the fishing is being more challenging than normal. Weather is the game changer here and is effectively destroying what could be some excellent fishing. Kenneth O’Keeffe Firstly if you have dodgy eyesight just tying a caenis fly pattern on your hook can be a challenge in itself, secondly weather conditions have to be nigh on perfect – mirror calm or with a slight corduroy ripple. I have down a lot of Brown Trout angling in Irish rivers but never from a boat in a lough. Having a cottage virtually on the shore meant we could return to base for a bite to eat and a break from the buttock numbing boat seats then head back out on to the lough for the evening session. A Lough Ree angler who has a boat on Lough Sheelin fished the lake late last week. Summer solstice or midsummer’s day fell on Saturday June 20th, marking the longest day and the shortest night. Fish catches this week were caught on a variety of patterns but the attractor patterns worked best. These Gillies or Guides know every nook and cranny of Lough Sheelin and will work hard all day to make sure you get the opportunity to catch your fair share of lively wild brown trout. When you are trying to match the hatch, you have to wait before casting to the fish that you’ve spotted but with attractor flies you can cast randomly, a free license to almost cast willy-nilly but hopefully over likely pockets of water that should hold fish. Second summer makes it tougher on Sheelin, though good waves bring great fish This tiny insect hatches all at once, literally thousands at the one time on the water and with so many naturals it really is pot luck as to whether the trout will find the artificial among the dozens sitting upon the surface film which of course greatly reduces your chances of a hook up. Fishermen are also worried about blue-green coloured algae in some places on the lake, fearing may prove poisonous to trout and wildlife. We will send you notification and highlights for free. The Lough Sheelin Boatmen. Thanks. As the fry get bigger they become that more aware of their marauding enemy so to overcome this the trout will hurtle themselves at full throttle into a shoal of small fish, in the hope of stunning some of them and then return to quietly pick off injured or dazed fish. Although a day widely celebrated in some circles, it still feels as if we are now on a slippery slope towards winter darkness and the urgency to get in some good fishing is now foremost in the trout fisherman’s mind. Angling is poor at the moment but it will change and there is a lot to look forward to if the weather changes – sedges, murrough, green peter and bloodworm. While the trout are fixated on the pinheads, it can be a difficult time for the fly angler so the best plan would be to stay away from the areas where the fry congregate and head out into the open water where the trout might be shoaling on daphnia or stick to the late evening fishing when there might be a possibility of catching buzzer or sedge feeding trout, again the choice of fishing is very weather dependent and the weather simply wasn’t kind to anglers this week. The weather has hampered a lot of the sedge fishing up to now and although there have been some good hatches of murrough, trout in general have shown no interest.
