The only one you really need to have is your E and possibly your A. I prefer to use dominant strings on my violin. Is it better to have 4 fine tuners or just one? Let me explain you why do many full size violins have only one fine tuner installed on their E strings. The only strings I had fine tuners on then were E-A. My question is..how do you tune a violin with only one fine tuner? Didn't go up to 4/4 till first year of high school. The drawbacks are relatively minor. It’s totally fine to use fine tuners to tune your violin, if you are a beginner violinist, or if you are uncomfortable using your pegs. The reason why i suggest this is because different brands of strings sound different. It is because the string length of a full size violin is longer, it is easier to fine tune a full size violin than fine tune a petite violin. I just bought a full size (4/4) violin a couple of days ago. Whether built-in or added on, fine tuners are a frequent source of buzzes, says Boston violin … But if the instrument is completely off-pitch, you'll need to start with adjusting the pegs, and use the fine tuners at the end to finish the tuning. why does my cheapo eBay box with strings come with 4 fine tuners...and so do a lot of expensive violins...but almost every REALLY expensive violin come with only 1 fine tuner!? If your violin is only slightly out-of-tune, using fine tuners alone may be enough. Always start tuning with the lowest string (G3) and then proceed to the higher ones: D4, A4 and finally E5. My other violins all have 4 fine tuners. Yes it is! Well, I love my geared pegs now. As strange as it may sound (couldn't avoid that pun) a violin generally sounds better without the fine tuners. ... Intermediate level instruments are usually strung with a steel string only on the highest string and thus only have one fine tuner. All of the violins that I have bought have the normal 4 pegs on the top. One fine tuner here -- E. I started on a 1/2-size fiddle, then went to 3/4 a few years later. The price varies by store. The only real difference you would probably hear would be if you were adding fine tuners to an ebony tailpiece. While fine tuners can help you with tuning, some experienced violin players prefer to use only one fine tuner for E string because it is more difficult to tune it with the peg. That was why I opted for geared pegs because I thought geared pegs were cheaper.
