Lough Corrib is 42,000 acres in size and stretches in length from within 4 miles of Galway City to within 2 miles of Maum Bridge, a distance of 33 miles. These piscivorous trout, live long, and grow large; up to 20 pounds. Opportunities abound for day trips along the Wild Atlantic Way and places such as Galway City, the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Conamarra National Park, the Aran Islands and even lovely Donegal. CONTACT. Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (+353 (0091-552550) reports of reasonable angling in the Oughterard area on mayfly patterns. Garreth in particular was an excellent angler, boating as many as ten fish per day compared to the four to eight that we were landing in three boats. FISHING RATES: Fishing free, boathire €60 per day for 2 anglers. Trolling takes place throughout the season but the lake is famous for high quality fly-fishing and dapping. Green drake mayflies hatch in the shallows and drift over the deep drop-off. We fished the same area as the day before, again with buzzers. There was no doubt that he had the hot boat that week; he took fish every day but one. Rick Taupier holds a PhD in History and owns Swift River Fly Fishing in New Salem, MA. I had long ago learned that it was best not to dwell on not catching fish but rather to stay positive and concentrate on good technique. After three days, three members of our group had landed Corrib brown trout and three of us were still in search of the experience. Boots, waders or rain-pants, and rain coats are vital. At 20 inches and 3.5 pounds it was my largest fish of the week, and it was spectacular. This site is the home of Lough Corrib Fly Fishing at The Fishing Lodge. We got pretty wet. It was a miserable day; cold, windy, and rainy. Share. But we could not locate feeding fish and had not even a single take. It would be stupid to suggest that catching Corrib trout is easy, its not, but the rewards provide great memories. Dan’s fish was a wonderful 3-pound fish and I highly enjoyed watching the fight and observing the trout in the clear water as it tried to avoid coming to the net. Though I am genetically a Celt from France, 72% of the men in Ireland and I come from the same human genetic haplogroup. In an effort to get out of the wind I crawled into the bottom of one of the boats and feel asleep in the sun. It began to give way and the boatman readied the net, warning, that when it saw the net, it would make another run or two. Shannon and its international airport, less than an hour and a half away, make it easily accessible to international travellers. Fishing Lough Corrib. Seventy-six are of anglers holding brown trout of four pounds and up. With its own private boat jetty it is ideally placed as a destination for anglers and specialises in providing fly fishing holidays but the beautiful scenery would also appeal to those looking for a base from which to pursue other activities or explore this wonderful part of Ireland. Gary was amused when I kissed it on the head before the release. Over the week we were the only group there on our maiden trip. Duckfly and Olive fishing continues through April. But it did the trick, and I was able to fish through the afternoon in relative comfort. I had cast my three flies about 60 feet from the boat and let them sink, counting to twelve before beginning a slow figure-eight retrieve. There are some web sites on fly fishing in Ireland that are worth checking out. I was intent on landing another and hopefully larger Corrib brown trout, but the weather was far from ideal and we were fishing buzzers in about 20 feet of water, not far from Greenfields on the eastern shore. Their clinker (lapstrake) construction makes them nearly ideal for drifting before the wind and maintaining a straight course. Four members of the group followed the guides to Greenfields while Kevin P. and I headed to Limnaugh Pier to meet up with Joel. Now we too were Corrib anglers. To the northwest of the Corrib is the famed Connemara region. The famous Lough Corrib, abundant with Salmon and wild brown trout, and just 15 minutes up the road, Lough Mask, another spectacular wild brown Trout Lake. That second day proved there were fish to be caught and that a couple of us were up to the task. It was our sixth and last day fly fishing on Ireland’s Lough Corrib. We all caught trout before the week was out. But as skilled as they are, it was a difficult week of fishing. County Galway’s Lough Corrib is a large limestone lake, over 30 miles from south to north, in one of western Ireland’s most beautiful landscapes. The guides, known locally as boatmen, were up to the task. We were fishing from Gary’s boat, and as he had the hot boat that week, we were optimistic. On day four I was alone with Joel and though we saw quite a few feeding fish we failed to get but one hook-up, and that was on Joel’s rod on a buzzer. Lough Corrib is fishing well, with hatches of sedge and mayfly bringing fish to the surface. The guides were guarded in their expectations. I personally believe that Lough Corrib is without question the best wild brown trout water in Europe, an opinion rightly seconded on a large, highly visible road sign as you drive into Oughterard, a town steeped in fishing history. Michelle and Ann served a hardy Irish breakfast each morning for up to 16 guests. We fished hard but success for some of us was elusive. Gary was still in the Irish military and on a month-long holiday. The design allows long drifts before the breeze, over the Lough’s broad limestone shallows, while casting to brown trout that average 15 to 16 inches. I have learned much fishing with him over the years. But they were feeding on buzzers, not olives, and we got only one take. Their feeding habits accentuate aspects of their appearance. While the trout are the central attraction the context is inseparable. It was in hope of a moment like this that I had returned to the Corrib with five companions.
