";s:4:"text";s:25175:"At the start of the book, Scrooge is portrayed as an unfeeling, cruel character which is shown when he tells the charity workers that if the poor would rather die than go to a workhouse, “then they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population”. Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning a changed man. A tough, high-shouldered, stooping old man, of a sawdusty fragrance, with his legs extraordinarily wide apart: so that in my short days I always saw some miles of open country between them when I met him coming up the lane. He sends a turkey to the Cratchits and gives Bob a raise, atoning for his previous bitterness toward his clerk in Stave One. “How do you do? I’ll raise your salary, and endeavour to assist your struggling family, and we will discuss your affairs this very afternoon, over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop, Bob! In Stave One of A Christmas Carol (December 1843) charity collectors approach Scrooge: "At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge," said the gentleman, taking up a pen, "it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. He also gives Bob Cratchit a payrise after absolutely PRANKING him by making him think that he was going to get fired xd. Hallo here! “You must have a cab.”. Really, for a man who had been out of practice for so many years, it was a splendid laugh, a most illustrious laugh. “I am much obliged to you. But, in fact, Scrooge offers Bob a pay rise, much to the Cratchit family's delight. He was on his stool in a jiffy; driving away with his pen, as if he were trying to overtake nine o’clock. 3. The flickering of the blaze showed preparations for a cosy dinner, with hot plates baking through and through before the fire, and deep red curtains, ready to be drawn to shut out cold and darkness. “I haven’t missed it. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! He had frisked into the sitting-room, and was now standing there: perfectly winded. I am as giddy as a drunken man. In stave five, Dickens presents Scrooge's redemption with giddy joy. There is no doubt whatever about that. There’s the corner where the Ghost of Christmas Present, sat! Stave 5 - Scrooge is overjoyed at being given a second chance at life and delivers a great Christmas turkey to the Cratchits. Outside, Scrooge runs into those charity collectors from the day before. He asks the boy to go to the nearby shop with the huge prize turkey in the window and to buy it, and offers him half a crown if he comes back quickly. Bob trembled, and got a little nearer to the ruler. What simile does Dickens use to describe Scrooge? As he stood there, waiting his arrival, the knocker caught his eye. A happy Near Year to all the world! In the afternoon he turned his steps towards his nephew’s house. A most particularly short man, and so fat, that he seemed all face and waistcoat. An invitation to dinner A considerable sum of money Nothing. The Spirits take Scrooge on a journey through his past, his present, and his possible future. He was so fluttered and so glowing with his good intentions, for a man who had been out of practice for so many years, it was a splendid laugh. It is a mercy he didn’t shake his arm off. A merry Christmas to everybody! The following day he gives Cratchit an increase in pay, and begins to become a father figure to Tiny Tim. Scrooge, grateful for a second chance at his life, sings the praises of the spirits and of Jacob Marley. “I’ll go in here, my dear.”. ” Scrooge symbolizes all that dampens the Christmas spirit? What did he give to this man? A great many back-payments are included in it, I assure you. Whoop!  A quarter past. The clock struck nine. Dickens introduces the first inkling that social responsibility and being kind to others as an important message in the novella in Stave One when Scrooge sits in his counting house in the cold and “two portly gentlemen” come in. a) Doorbell ringing. He apologizes to the portly gentleman he meets on the street and pledges lavish contributions for his charity, where in Stave One he threw him out of his counting-house. “My dear Mr. Scrooge, are you serious?”, “If you please,” said Scrooge. “Thank’ee,” said Scrooge. “What a delightful boy!” said Scrooge. Here the reader meets Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserable but wealthy old man. His hat was off, before he opened the door; his comforter too. “Why, it’s impossible to carry that to Camden Town,” said Scrooge. Two Solicitors for Charity "This lunatic, in letting Scrooge's nephew out, had let two other people in. “I don’t know what to say to such munifi—”, “Don’t say anything, please,” retorted Scrooge. Scrooge dismisses the charity collectors. Merry Christmas!”. In 1843, on Christmas Eve in London, Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old businessman, does not share the merriment of Christmas.He declines his cheerful nephew Fred's invitation to his annual Christmas dinner party, and rejects two gentlemen's offer to collect money for charity. A Christmas Carol Stave 5. "The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. Stave Two gradually shows outburst of emotion, (which there were no signs of in Stave One), as the ‘Spirit of Christmas Past’ reintroduces Scrooge to his childhood; “A solitary child, neglected by his friends… Scrooge said he knew it.
