Rated #3 in the best albums of 1977, and #42 of all-time album.. . Yet, delve deeper and you can see the connection. Carried Away 6. (no pun intended) This is an exercise in hearing ART. Verlaine and Lloyd, despite their differences (or maybe because of), are great foils for each other and each are magnificent guitar players, and backed by the rhythm section of Ficca (drums) and Smith (bass) have the ability to let loose their creativity. Verlaine only exceeds him in terms of out-thereness. You don’t, obviously, because you can’t. At this point Marquee Moon's riff is forever embedded in my brain and to write out my thoughts about it seem bizarre and impossible, but i'll do my best. Regarding the music:Guitar riffs ARE deceptively simple- but not in that bland pop(new wave) way...And though i'd heard most of these songs before- a few, many times over 3 decades-i never fully appreciated those lyrics.I knew they were clever,but they,also,were deceptively simple.Now,for those not familiar with this band at all...Not to offend a fellow reviewer,but the only band of those named that i could categorize this with is the Ramones- and that not for musical similarities.Television was near the grass roots of punk rock in the u.s.,along with Patti Smith,the Ramones,New York Dolls,Blondie,Talking Heads,James Chance,etc...By the time of the first albums,Blondie was far more pop,Ramones were far more simple,the Cars & the Knack (aside from mostly sucking)were just jumping on the bandwagon,and had absolutely nothing to do with punk...Velvet Underground & Bowie being from a Different era altogether- V.U.being practically in a category by itself,and being done many years before Television hit the scene;and Bowie having decided to become a commercial product by the mid 70's...It's hard to compare this band with another.Maybe Patti Smith, though this sound is brighter,somewhat more pop than the Smith Group's straight ahead rock tendency- and rarely exceeds maybe 120 words in a song,as opposed to Patti's 1000 word ramblings...Let's just say this:There's A LOT of guitar here.The drums & bass are clean and clear.Tom Verlaine impresses me as a former kid in school who knew he was supposed to be a star,but the other kids didn't see it,and he made it just to spazz out on stage,spilling his poetic,insightful and sometimes agonized guts out for all to see...and guitars. No other band at the time could have got away with a ten-minute title track (live, it stretched to nigh on half an hour!) First it’s Television music is no doubt 5 stars. There was suddenly a light at the end of the tunnel. Counterbalance sees it all backward. giving them a distinct advantage over other bands. So when Marquee Moon arrived, it was an Event. Too Bad the Sound Doesn't Match the Previous Rhino Release! The two stars is for the condition of the 180 gram Rhinovinyl LP. . Amazingly it played. this reminds us that punk started out as more than spit and razorblades, Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2006. Although much of the material on Television's revolutionary debut album predates what would be typically considered "post-punk", I feel pretty comfortable in the assertion that 'Marquee Moon' is the greatest post-punk album of all time. The original album is reproduced here quite nicely, and dare I say it? There are no weak points in Marquee Moon but on vinyl its peaks can be better appreciated: after the beauteous guitar arpeggios and playful innuendo of Fiction (“I start to tell the tale / You complain of my dic-tion”) , side one closes with what will always be Television’s masterpiece. Out now on limited 2-disc deluxe blue vinyl. I must comment on another review- since there is only one other review!..I agree about the album replica problem.Or more specifically the Rhino problem.I always feel i may scratch the cd as i put it into the sleeve.Also,i think they could've made it 1/4 inch smaller,so it would fit in with the other cds.That said,it is a nearly perfect replica of the original 12"album cover -and inner sleeve(complete with tiny lyrics!) The best you can do is to repackage it and put it on coloured vinyl with an extra disc of goodies. In fact, Television and Marquee Moon … This is an fantastic reissue of a fantastic album. The band would split up only a year later (due to artistic differences between Verlaine and Lloyd), but not before launching a … It’s likely being stored the same as a cd (hot warehouse, hot to cold, not seen as an issue. That’s what Rhino Records have done with Marquee Moon. It’s a long story, sure. Television recorded Marquee Moon in September 1976 at A & R Recording in New York City. Plus, the opening riff to “Ain’t That Nothin’” sounds way too close to the riff of “Marquee Moon… Rhino is either turning out crap, or these records are’nt being stored and handled properly. Television’s 1977 masterpiece Marquee Moon is the 25th Greatest Album of All Time, but is it too “too too” to put a finger on? Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2006. This album opens your eyes to what it is possible to get out of your guitar. The second disc contains Television’s first single Little Johnny Jewel from 1976 (when the song was divided into two halves to fit the seven-inch format), now rejoined at the middle, along with a trio of alternative takes and an instrumental. Side two opens with the stop-start guitar figure of Elevation, and contains the two newest tracks written  especially for the album: the slow, languid Guiding Light with its glissando guitar finale, and Torn Curtain, an even slower, statelier song showcasing the quieter, more reflective side of Television that would be explored on their second album Adventure, closing with the guitar that gently weeps over the valedictory lyrics (“Rolling back the years / The tears I’ve never shed”).
