In our research in Pennsylvania, we also observed the formation of plow pans on dairy farms that used the chisel plow (Figure 4). Reduced aeration and increased runoff will be the result. The conventional till soil could be compacted to a maximum density of 1.65 g/cm3, which is considered root limiting for this soil. Based on this work, a multistate project was initiated to get a better understanding of yield losses due to traffic in alfalfa.
