The rather small 18 karat gold nib comes in fine, broad, and medium widths, you can see there’s some line vibration due to the fact that it’s a very slim nib but overall, it’s okay and it does the job. Even though the back tip indicates this is a piston filler, it only works with cartridges or cartridge converters. Obviously, probably the best value in a fountain pen, period. At first glance, it might look very timeless, classic, and understated to you, however, in the fountain pen world, it looks really like a knockoff Montblanc Meisterstuck. So it is nonsense to say that it is “rather unique” or “more unique” than some other things of the same kind. A little about my preferences - 1. It has a nice pop-top cap that posts well on the back of the pen and stays on while you write. What rational justification can I have for lusting after a Pilot Custom 823 that costs 15 times as much, other than it’s just a totally awesome work of engineering? But we QC every Lamy 2000 that comes through our shop, so you are definitely going to get a good one from us. On the high end pens that I’ve tried such as the Custom 74, the Custom Heritage 92, and now the Custom 823, the nibs need little-to-no-tuning.Unless you order directly from Japan, the Custom 823 is available only in Pilot's stock fine, medium… Both of these pens, however, have served me very well during my working years and continue to do so now that I am retired. I recently bought a Pilot Custom 823 from someone local to me. Solid company. I haven’t tested a Vanishing Point yet (which might be a soon to be purchase), but I assume it might have similar results. It’s a large, stiff nib, labeled “No. 2) Would you rate the 74’s quality of writing experience the equal of or similar to the 823, (with emphasis on the distinction between the nibs)? An alternative to consider – find a reputable dealer who restores Parkers and pick up a genuine Parker 51, or better yet, a pen and pencil set. The semi-hooded hidden nib is made of 14-karat gold, to get the silver look, it’s platinum plated. To me, it looks like a durable understated mix between a Bauhaus mid-century modern design. You may have to settle for a different Iroshizuku bottle, and peel off the label. Made in France, the Waterman Carene comes with a three-year warranty that can be extended to five years if you register the fountain pen. The fountain pen is comfortable to hold, it has a moderate weight and is rather well balanced. Plus, what could be better than pulling out a 60-70 year old pen to sign that big contract? Beautiful hand turned resin body, and the steel nib writes unbelievably smooth. That said, the things that make the 823 cost significantly more are the gold nib, and the vacuum-filling system. The Custom 823 seems to be a little more on the extreme with the fine and medium, meaning that the fine is just a bit finer than the Custom 74, and the medium is just a bit broader. The pen retails anywhere from $120 to $300 for the more all-metal versions. The nib is extremely smooth, though the upstrokes were very dry (to the point where there was no flow). In my limited experience with FP’s I’ve found that the modern Cross pens are far lesser quality. It is made in Japan and three years guarantee against mechanical failures. Thanks a million Sven Raphael. The pen in your video should only be referred to as the Pilot Custom 823. I’ve been interested in the Diamine green black and Noodlers red black, cause I have these uni-ball blx pens and they have all inks infused with black and I really love the colors so if I’m trying to find all these colors in pen form. First, it retails at about $270- $290, comes in a big box often with an inkwell. Overall, the pilot capless is a smooth writer with steady ink flow, it is neither too wet nor too dry and it is perfect to take a lot of quick notes, you probably won’t write a long letter with it. What objective metrics could justify such a purchase? This pen looks very classic compared to the previous three. 15” size, which is roughly the equivalent of a German No. It’s always good to visit a pen shop and try different models and nibs. It can take cartridges or a converter. So in conclusion, if you’re ready to take the plunge and take your fountain pen game to the next level, all these five contenders will be a noticeable step up from a Lamy Safari or a Pilot Metropolitan. I think it’s a good choice for people who want a unique streamlined design and appreciate a slightly heavier pen. The 823 fine is actually thinner than the Lamy extra-fine, but the medium is closer to a Lamy medium. For the best experience in terms of writing, I think the Pilot custom 823 is great and if you want something that looks more like a Montblanc Meisterstuck, you can go with a sailor 1911. The lines are quite smooth and simple. When they’re called green/black or red-black, that really just means they’re very dark green or red. Sophisticated mid-range fountain pens in the hundred dollar to three hundred dollar price range. The broad is really smooth, and has just a hint of stub-ness (made up word!) It’s ideal for people who want a classic understated cigar design in a nice size with a high-quality nib made out of 21 karat gold. I wouldn’t want a line thicker than a 1.1, but not as fine as the steel fine. I watched your video comparison of the 74, Heritage 92 and 823 but just wanted to follow up a little more specifically. It’s sort of like choosing between a Ferrari and Maserati  Honestly, with all factors in play, the Custom 74 is the better value. So who’s it for? One of the unusual things about the 823 is its filling system. Now generally, while modern Waterman fountain pens are not necessarily a great collector’s item, this one is usually quite popular. The Pilot capless and the Lamy 2000 seem to me rather specialized in their appeal—the first being, as you say, for people who want something that has the ease of use of a ball-point pen; the second for those who like the modernistic styling of Lamy (as I do not). I think it’s perfect for doctors or other people who have to take lots of notes quickly and have to move on and they don’t have the time to remove the cap or keep it and so that would come in very handy with a pilot capless. Much better choice than the Waterman. Please Sven, reconsider this practice as you are destroying all of the hard work made in establishing the site. Unlike with a ballpoint pen, the clip actually has to be on the side of the nib because you want to store it upwards, otherwise, you may leak ink onto your shirt or your jacket when you move quickly. Smooth as silk and nothing better for the price (or many times the price).
