I felt that the extra computer science classes would help if I wanted to do programming instead. I am a second year, but I am at a new institution so I am a bit behind, but I totally agree. The typical computer engineer earned a six-figure salary as of May 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. I landed in a very good career as an electrical/industrial controls engineer. As we embrace the Internet of Things and other advances in digital technology, computer engineers … Where are they working? Electrical engineers need to have a bachelor’s degree, at the very least, and master’s degrees are often encouraged. I don't believe either would put you at any significant advantage or disadvantage. As a computer engineering graduate, here's my word of caution. In the outside world, both of those degrees go hand in hand. Every CE I graduated with would have no problem being a software developer. This varies a lot school to school. So I just spent the last few hours watching major prep on YouTube (specifically the CE and EE videos). Thanks. I may look into that, but I know that you technically apply to the program while taking upper divisions, so I would obviously still have time to weigh my options. I was much happier on the software side than hardware, but its different for everyone. Search. The CompE curriculum was 75% EE and 25% computer science. I guess what I'm getting at is that your degree doesn't define you. Electrical and computer engineering involve the same core subjects. I'm sorry if this post doesn't make much sense, I cannot sleep and I may just be babbling and overthinking but I'm very curious as to what career path I should follow. It's just a matter of how you apply your self, really. As a side note, if you could have double majored, would you choose CE &EE/CS? IT professionals get paid generously for their labor and employers are prepared to pay even higher salaries for college graduates. I feel like it could either be advantageous or not because I'm breaking up my "specialization" between two majors - so it could mean that people who major in strictly CompSci or EE have an advantage over me with being more disciplined in their practice. As a freshman, I really disliked programming, so the choice was easy. I wish I knew a little more about RF design and motor dynamics, but I have a solid knowledge base of EE topics. The courses in EE go heavy into analog, whereas CE dips more into programming/softwareDev. I made the same call. There should be a lot of overlap between the majors, especially through 200-level classes. There were very few EE classes that I wanted to take, that I didn't get to take because I was CE. At my school in the mid 1990's I switched from EE to CompE. I always knew I could fall back on that, worst case. My question is - is this a good route? In current year,  I think CE is the right choice. If you are, you don't necessarily have to decide immediately. Entered as EE, finished as a dual with computer engineer, computer science. Check out the 2015/16 threads for the disciplines you're interested in and take some time to read the responses to get an idea of what engineers actually do for work. The job search is hell. Analog isn't for me. Both CE and EE will get you similar jobs, but I think you'd enjoy CE courses a lot more. Very flexible degree.  It's just a foundation. They ensure that their hardware work properly with the latest software technology. EE's do not have that luxury. CEs continue into microprocessors working with assembly, C and programming microcontrollers. Now, 2 years in the field, I'm a controls/systems engineer and get to tinker with hardware and software. Good to know, I know my program's curriculum is really similar to EE (I think most are) so maybe I'll stick with EE until it's clear to my what I should do. While microelectronics and signal processing is required at a basic level, EEs can choose to specialize in either of those fields or power. I've been interested in EE for a while and have been thinking about which sub-discipline I'd actually pursue. CompE (at my school) seems about half CSCI and half EE courses. I quickly lost interest in the analog EE labs where it seemed we just built amplifiers and bass/treble controls. My college was just getting their official CompE program off the ground when I went there. Unless you take it upon yourself to learn more, you will end up equivalent to a mediocre EE and mediocre CS grad rolled up in one. I've wanted to do EE but CompE seems like a good route since I could still follow EE with a little bit more of a well-rounded CSCI background.
