Empirical research on the determinants of economic growth has typically neglected the influence of religion. Religion isn’t just a component of culture, though: in many parts of the world, it is one of the defining elements of society. Incorporated as a not-for-profit foundation in 1971, and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Forum is tied to no political, partisan or national interests. The beliefs are, in turn, the principal output of the religion sector, and church attendance measures the inputs to this sector. That is, growth depends on the extent of believing relative to belonging. To fill this gap, we use international survey data on religiosity for a broad panel of countries to investigate the effects of church attendance and religious beliefs on economic growth. The beliefs are an output of the religion sector, and church attendance is an input to this sector. Non-religious countries experience greater economic growth, study finds. Results show that economic growth responds positively to religious beliefs, notably beliefs in hell and heaven, but negatively to church attendance.
