Vegetables can be equally as appetizing as the fruits and can (and should) be served with other leafy greens like lettuce (avoid iceberg lettuce since it is sparse in nutrients). Parakeets feed one another by eating the seeds themselves, and then regurgitating it into their friend's mouth. Kale or spinach are good to add into a vegetable mix. They help clean each others hard-to-reach spots. Parakeets show signs of affection to their friends by preening or feeding one another. My budgies are feeding each other as well. Feeding each other may show affection but that doesn't mean they will breed. When budgies sleep, they often fluff up their feathers, trapping in warm air, and making themselves cozy. Parakeets when they find mates or best friends, will often preen each other (the picking at each other's feathers that you described), especially around their friend's beak and head, as these are the areas a parakeet cannot clean by himself.
