In 1983, Dunwoody stood for election as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, alongside Peter Shore, on a Eurosceptic platform[4] (a position she consistently maintained throughout her career - she voted against the Maastricht Treaty seven times[4]). She left school aged 16, and became a journalist with a local newspaper in Fulham,[4] covering births, marriages and deaths. [4] She also served on the Labour National Executive Committee for seven years, from 1981 to 1988, collaborating closely with Betty Boothroyd. Dunwoodyâs father was a career army officer and a decorated veteran, and her childhood was spent traveling with her family from post to post. She became the first female battalion commander for the 82nd Airborne Division in 1992 and the first female general at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2000âa position she ascended to from her first assignment there, as division property-book officer.
